Home Learning
Please consider these tips to prepare your child(ren) for success when learning from home. Supporting a child from home while also being a parent and working is extremely demanding. These are suggestions. Just do the best you can and whenever you do find time to put toward it, use this as a set of guidelines.
study space |
Set up a designated area in your home for learning that is free of additional distractions. If possible, have one area for computer use and a second area for quiet independent work.
|
Distractions |
Discuss strategies for maintaining focus and avoiding distractions. A study space should be quiet. There should be no distractions such as TV, computers, phones, etc. available.
|
schedule |
Create a schedule with your child to provide structure and expectations. Schedule meals such as breakfast and lunch. Schedule a recess break (15 minutes) and send them outside if possible. Schedule a 20-minute Daily Physical Activity time and send them outside if possible.
Have a check-in time in the morning. During this time, students should say "hi" in TEAMS, check their work for the day, and plan a schedule. If possible, students should print any worksheets and then move away form the computer to work with paper and pencils/pens. Ideally, students will check-in in the morning and then at the end of the day to ask questions. Perhaps they could have some time after lunch to ask some quick questions related to their work. Try to keep time at the computer to a minimum (5-20 minutes each time). There will be times when students are expected to participate in online discussions or watch videos. Especially if you have more than one child, try to set up strategies for them to share technology if necessary. Encourage students to tell me if they have conflicts so I can make changes where possible. Break up the day into "chunks" for (1) Language Arts, giving twice as much time as the others (2) Math, and (3) All other subjects. Use the time to work specifically on those subjects, to provide balance. |
motivation |
Pay attention to your child's motivation levels and don't let them "hide." Some children will avoid their work and become evasive with their teachers and parents. Pay attention and look for signs of this and contact me if you're concerned.
|
special needs |
If your child has special needs, pay careful attention to how online learning is affecting them and reach out to me or their support teachers if you have concerns.
